The Partnership for Observations of the Global Oceans (POGO) is a consortium of major oceanographic institutes around the world. POGO members play a major role in making ocean observations and promoting their value, especially as regards improved meteorological forecasting, to marine and terrestrial end user communities. This short presentation introduces POGO in terms of its membership, global role, achievements and recently launched strategy. The importance of ocean observations is highlighted. The POGO Industrial Liaison Council is briefly introduced as a mechanism for POGO to interact with various marine and maritime businesses categorised as provider, intermediaries and end-users.
