Novel pipeline tracking, 09 May 2013 10:08

Subsea cable and pipeline specialist Innovatum of Bury St Edmunds UK has developed a novel area survey system, or ‘Wing’, as a complement to its magnetic cable and tracking systems. Requiring fewer operating personnel, it is claimed to be more straightforward to manage than using ROVs or towed sleds for depth surveys. With no power requirement, the device can be towed in waters while increasing speeds at which surveys can be carried out in addition to providing wider survey swathes. Its design is similar to a pair of aircraft wings adjoining a small fuselage with control surfaces operating in a manner identical to those of an airplane so as to adjust the direction of transit through waters, upwards or downwards. A complete assembly is controlled and data processed via an umbilical and laptop.
