Maritime Security

Maritime Security

Wednesday, 14th March 2012, South Gallery, Room 7/8

The last decade has seen a dramatic rise in the potential threat, in its many different guises, from the sea: Piracy, terrorism, insurgency, border disputes, narcotic, illegal immigration, protest and military.

The economic impact caused by a threat to maritime assets and infrastructure and the consequent psychological impact on national pride has led to a substantial growth in requirements for integrated surveillance, control and command of sensor platforms. This, in turn, is forcing the threat into new domains – often still classed as “the soft underbelly” of maritime security –underwater.

This conference programme will be organised in a morning session and in an afternoon session.

Morning session

Chaired by Rob Balloch, Strategic Business Development Director, Sonardyne

Two specific issues related to waterside security will be addressed:
  • The successful detection, tracking and classification of underwater and surface threats and how the data is managed in an integrated system to reduce false alarm rates and minimise “false positives”
  • The locating and identification of potential threats to safe navigation and operation of waterside critical infrastructure, including (but not limited to) ports, offshore platforms and industry
This session is targeted at informing potential users and industry about the unique challenges that the operating environment creates and the current capability, capability gaps and the potential opportunities that exist.

International Partnerships: Ocean Technology Collaborations with Government, Academia, and Industry

Organised by Michael J. Larkin, Technology Transfer Coordinator, Dr. Theresa A. Baus, Head, Technology Partnerships Office, Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, USA

The need for innovation is increasingly driven by heightened security concerns, increased pressure for sustainable use of the ocean, understanding climate change, new shipping routes, and the search for hydrocarbon resources in increasingly deep and hostile environments. Innovation is often spawned by technology transfer partnerships such as commercialization of knowledge or inventions developed at government or university research laboratories, collaborative R&D between organizations, and development of dual-use technologies.

This workshop will look at:

  • How to implement technology transfer mechanisms that involve government, industry and academic members from multiple countries
  • What is the current state of government funded technology transfer  by examining the types of national and regional technology transfer related offices and programs
  • What are the partnering and funding mechanisms used
  • What are industry views of the value of technology transfer
