Title
Ground based remote sensing as a tool to measure spatial wave field variations in coastal approaches
Description
The wave monitoring system WaMoS II was developed for real time measurements of directional ocean wave spectra. The system is based on a standard marine X-band radar and can be operated to monitor the sea state from fixed platforms, in coastal areas or from moving vessels. In contrary to wave buoys it allows for temporal and spatial wave analysis. Wave data are needed in coastal areas to help increase safety of ship navigation and improve coastal protection strategies. This paper presents data obtained from the island of Sylt, Germany and at the entrance to Port Phillip Bay, Australia. Both regions are characterised by a complex bottom topography that leads to a highly spatially variable wave field. The wave transformation such as refraction, shoaling, and dissipation are described and quantified. WaMoS II proves to be a powerful tool to monitor changes of sea state caused by local topography.

Title
High Resolution Current and Bathymetry Determined by Nautical X-Band Radar in Shallow Waters
Description
The bathymetry of coastal areas is of great importance for off-shore activities, ship traffic and coastal protection. Coastal erosion and accretion as well as human activities can lead to rapidly changing bathymetry.
In the paper a brief introduction into the measuring principle of WaMoS II is given and results of a high resolution current and bathymetric mapping technique for shallow water areas (<20m)are presented. For validation these results are compared with model data and in-situ measurements.

Title
The On Board Wave and Motion Estimator OWME
Description
Vessels and floating structures are subject to wave induced motions affecting and often even preventing their operation. A system to predict short periods of quiescent vessel motions a few minutes in advance could reduce the costly ‘Waiting on Weather’. The Joint Industry Project ‘On board Wave and Motion Estimator (OWME)’ developed a system capable of predicting the vessel motions on board in real time up to two minutes in advance.
This paper describes the concept and shows results of a first field trial aboard an offshore support vessel in mild sea conditions.

Title
WaMoS II X-band radar wave profiles - examples from applications
Description
Nautical X-Band radars used for navigation can additionally be utilised as a tool to determine spectral and individual wave properties. The Wave Monitoring System WaMoS II, when connected to a conventional nautical X-Band radar detects full directional wave spectra and derived statistical sea state parameters as well as surface currents.
WaMoS II is continuously improved: New features are developed for high-resolution current measurements, estimation of the water depth as well as for single wave detection.
Particularly the development and derivation of sea surface elevation maps allows to investigate and describe the spatial and temporal development of 3-D ocean surface waves. The high resolution data can be fed into real time ship motion prediction models which then can forecast quiescent motion periods which are most relevant for various offshore operations.
