About

John has been described as one of the world’s leading energy business analysts. A serial entrepreneur, he has spent over 40 years in the energy sector, forming, growing and selling three successful companies.

With an interest in SCUBA diving and a technical background in electronics and underwater acoustics, for 5-years he worked with manned submersibles (including Jacques Cousteau’s famous ‘yellow submarine’) before pioneering the commercial development of ROVs.

A growing interest in markets then led him to spend some 30 years researching and analysing the energy and marine sectors, becoming a consultant to the world’s leading energy companies, investment banks and private equity funds, together with government agencies worldwide, the European Commission and presidential offices.

Much of his work has involved determining the business prospects for new technologies and innovations and the key factors for commercial success.

He is perhaps best known for his last company Douglas-Westwood.  Formed in 1990, it completed over 1,000 projects and gained clients in more than 70 countries. Following his sale of the company to form Westwood Global Energy he retired as Chairman in December 2016.
